Today I’m introducing a new release by talented multi-genre author, Vashti Quiroz-Vega. I’ll let her take it from here.
Hi, everyone! Thank you for stopping by. I am beyond thrilled to be a guest on Mark’s blog!
Today I’d like to share a snippet from my new release The Rise of Gadreel in Gadreel’s POV.
On the way to the next village, the tinkling of a bell caught me by surprise. I stopped in my tracks at the strange sound and honed my hearing.
“What’s happening?” Dracúl asked. “Why—”
“Shhh. Listen.” I pointed in the direction of the sound with one hand while pressing the index finger of my other hand against my lips.
The bell jingled within earshot. Golem and Dracúl acknowledged hearing it, and soon after, Sabina did too. I beckoned them to follow, keeping my finger pressed to my lips. We tiptoed toward the sound and came upon a cemetery bordered by woods on three sides.
“This is an odd place for a cemetery, isn’t it?” I whispered. By the looks of them, they agreed. I read nearby headstones, and the bell tinkled again. I straightened my spine, my muscles tensing.
“Oh God! I recognize what this is.” Sabina’s chest rose and fell with rapid breaths as she spoke. “We must find the bell that’s ringing . . . quickly!”
Sabina ran, searching each grave she came across. “A tiny bell with a rope attached to it is tied to a stick placed by the tombstone. That rope extends to inside the casket, so that someone buried alive could ring it.”
“You mean . . . someone is buried alive in this graveyard and is now pulling on that rope?” Golem asked, running beside her.

4Wills Blog Tour Day 7
We wanted to share some of the feedback we have received. Also, we want to encourage you to leave a fair and honest review for all authors you read.
Breakfield and Burkey have received various reviews and comments. All our stories are reviewed by Kirkus along the way. Those comments have been positive. We also use portions of these on our Amazon pages and in social media. Overall, the comments have been positive. Other formal reviewers we solicit have picked out elements that are good as well as suggestions.
Individuals are those we pay a lot of attention to. Burkey looks at them and comments back in some cases. We appreciate the comments from people who hope the books will become a film or TV series. Many like specific characters. We have one reader who has kept up with the series and as one evil character evolved, she repeated indicated the character was vile. Many enjoy the series overall and comment as such.
We respect people who leave fair and honest reviews. However, we have found the anonymity of the Internet provides people a platform to vent behind a mask. This is the same for many social media exchanges. Rudeness is the focus, laced with meanness. Some have commented that the stories are not realistic. The technology is real and applied in a manner that may not be apparent in very day use in our digital world. It could be that their frame of reference is like someone who has just discovered the miracle products of Teflon and Velcro.
For better or worse, we have lived the technology evolution wave, so we have the knowledge and experience for the facts we embed in the stories. Some people simply don’t have our broad-based exposure to multiple technologies, some of which were surpassed by the newest shiny object. When some people do not understand something, it can embarrass them, so they attack to make it irrelevant. We suspect it is simply a different frame of reference.
The technology is the foundation of a story, but they truly are the struggles of the cyber good guys and gals versus the bad actors from the Darknet, who are also gender neutral. The Darknet is after all an equal opportunity employer. Technology has been a male dominated industry, but with programs like STEM more females are embracing this industry. Toward that we have strong female characters on both sides of the digital battlefield.
More than a few people have said that the stories we tell are all too frighteningly real. They ask what they might do to protect themselves against cyber thieves. In response to these requests, we point them to our cyber security health kit and provide some tips and tricks for people to protect themselves on line. We offer free tips and tricks sheets on how to build a good secure password, avoiding email phishing, and ways to avoid identity theft. You are welcome to email us Authors@EnigmaSeries.com if you are interested in learning more.
We like giving back to the community based on what we have witnessed over the years in the high-tech arena. We even have a free coloring book as a download with a cyber security quiz in the back of it as a fun exercise to make folks think. Our books are geared to an adult, but the coloring book is fine for children. It may help them learn as they become more connected in our digital playground.
We would also invite you to take a look at our Kickstarter campaign for The Enigma Threat. You can learn a bit more about us, watch the book trailer, and support our efforts to start down the path to a screenplay.

Please have a look!
Thank you, Mark, for having me here today, and sharing the release of This Last Chance 🙂
Excerpt from This Last Chance.
“My name is Nester. I’ve been around a long time, way before humans invented their first stone tool. My kind migrated from a distant planet that couldn’t sustain us anymore, in case you’ve been wondering where we came from. Although I doubt you winged ones—that’s what we call you angels—give evildwel history much thought. Your attention goes to the humans, including this young woman, Amber. You hardly leave her side. It’s an unsettling thought, but I can almost understand your devotion. I feel something from Amber that used to repel me, but now it draws me to her, much like you. Not sure what it is, though.
“I’m attempting to communicate with you, like winged ones do, by thoughts. I can’t take the chance of speaking out loud and being overheard by another evildwel. Anyway, it’s my hope you can hear me because my life is literally spinning out of control.”
Nester paused and studied the beautiful winged one. Zelina didn’t indicate she wanted him to stop, so he continued to push his thoughts to her.
“There was this planet before Earth where we ran out of food. We had no entities like winged ones to stop us, so the planet’s inhabitants destroyed each other. We feasted well on their fear and suffering, something we’ve done since time began. I’ve heard some voice the opinion that it was even before that, since we only know we are here, not how we came into existence. I’ve never pondered much on the philosophical part of our presence but considered what we did like culling the weak from the herd, until now.
“Humankind was still new when we arrived, but they supplied us with a feast, much like the banquets spread out for kings and queens. I don’t like to admit it to you, but I’ve dined on the hatred and misery with each blow inflicted through slavery, genocide, torture, burning witches, wars, serial killers, or a man simply abusing his wife or child. Human hatred and fear were delicious food for me.”
Nester paused again, making sure Zelina wouldn’t lash out at him for saying that. Her face was serene, gazing down at her human. It was as if he didn’t exist. His discomfort sharing himself was painful, like a festering open wound, but what other choice did he have?
Six months after Amber’s sister is brutally murdered, she’s still looking for answers, and now someone is stalking her and no one believes her. Home alone with a powerful snowstorm approaching, Amber is determined to take control of the investigation by hiring a private detective, but her plans are disrupted when she finds herself snowed in with people she may not be able to trust. Meanwhile, Nester the evildwel, whose entire existence has been feeding on fear and pain, is seeking help from the angel who’s protecting Amber. Nester and Amber need answers. Can Amber figure out what’s going on with some subtle help from an angel? Will Nester find what he needs from his enemies? The worlds of good and evil clash, and the outcome will determine not only Amber’s and Nester’s fate but life as they know it.
We have two wood rat houses off the magical trail.
Lake Tahoe is the first place I saw it snow.
I’ve only been on a boat on Lake Tahoe once–to scatter cremains.
