From Rocks to Radiance!

First of all, I cannot emphasize enough that I take NO credit for the beauties that you’ll see in these photos. My role in this whole operation was merely to gather some stones, and I didn’t even collect all of them.

The credit belongs to my lovely wife, Tanya, and our two daughters, Amanda and Isabel. So often, author’s blogs, at least mine, center on the craft of writing, but neglect to show appreciation for the many other avenues of creative expression.

I’m so fortunate to have found someone who’s talent for visual art far exceeds my own. Tanya has a diploma in Interior Design and runs her own business. Her past experience also involves producing amazing three-dimensional cakes, sorry no photos for those. I know someone, among my readership, who has the same talent.

But for today, I’ll focus on a recent project. You see, there is an area along our home’s exterior that juts over the flowerbed. A lack of rain and sunlight prevents most plants from growing there.

Left to me, that spot would remain a barren oasis. Oh, let’s face it, the flowerbeds would be dandelions.

Fortunately, the rest of my family has far greater vision for this type of thing. So, here are a few photos that demonstrate Rocks to Radiance!

Take one bag of rocks, preferably smooth and shaped as close to the image you wish to portray as possible.

“Me? Why I’m just a little ol’ bag of rocks.”

I hope you enjoyed this little foray into the world of visual arts. Let’s show our appreciation to those who brighten our world by honoring their talent!

Born and raised on a farm near Brockville, Ontario, Mark Bierman's childhood consisted of chores, riding horses, snowmobile races across open fields, fishing trips to a local lake, and many other outdoor adventures. He was also an avid reader of both fiction and non. Transitioning towards adulthood also meant moving from the farm and into large urban areas that introduced this country boy to life in the big cities. After a short stint as a private investigator, he moved into the role of Correctional Officer, working at both Millhaven Institution and Kingston Penitentiary, until it closed.

  1. You make a really great point, Mark, on “other avenues of creative expression.” Painted rocks are appearing in many unexpected places in our neighbourhood. I have a friend who has collected rocks all of her life. I just make sure she carries them home on a hike.

Tanya is amazing with her talent for art and design. I agree, “from the mundane to the beautiful!” And a fun project! Thank you for brightening my world. I will now head out for a walk and pay attention to the rocks.

  2. What a great idea! Someone in the town where I live has been painting rocks and leaving them around the village to brighten people’s days–such a sweet gesture!

    1. Thank you, I wish I could take credit for it, but alas, I cannot. Nice that someone in your area is leaving inspirational messages around town, it’s happening here, too. 🙂

  3. I absolutely love the rocks! What a beautiful idea. I’m a big rock fan and had been thinking of painting words on some and adding to the Magical Trail. I hope you don’t mind if I add a flower or two.

  4. I love this artistic adventure! One of my favorite diversions is to attend an art fair. Oil, watercolor or photo artwork, stitchery items, carved woods….all of it I love. And, it’s great fun meeting the artists. Thank you for sharing, Mark!

  5. How special this project is! Something created together always leaves lasting memories. I personally like the last image, Trip to Rocky Mountains. I love how the shape of the rocks was used to accommodate a tree, clouds and blue sky, earth and flowers.
Such hands on projects lay the foundation for more greater things, later on.
    Well done, Ladies 🙂

  6. What a great way to show some love to some plain rocks. They’re pretty! I need your wife to come over and design my whole house for me. lol! I love interior design but I’m just not good at it so she can teach me, too. 😀
